The Lord's message to the 7 Churches...

The Seven Churches of Revelation, also known as The Seven Churches of the Apocalypse and The Seven Churches of Asia (referring to the Roman province of Asia, not the entire continent), are seven major churches of Early Christianity, (First - Century) as mentioned in the New Testament Book of Revelation.

Chapters 2 + 3 of the Revelation had specific messages for each of these seven churches. The message of each of the seven letters is directed to the angel of the particular church that is mentioned. The term angel in this context could denote the local church leader, or it could refer to the spiritual guardian angel of that church.

The letters follow a common pattern...

The letters follow a common pattern: the Lord of hosts first addresses each church and identifies himself, then defines things that He knows about the church in question. After this a challenge or reproach is given, followed by a promise. In all seven cases the admonition is included, "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches", although sometimes this comes before the promise and sometimes after. Repent, fear not, hold fast, be watchful, overcome and be prepared, behold, I am coming quickly with My reward! Although the letters differ in length in accord with the needs of each community, all conclude with an appeal to hold fast and to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Each church is promised that everyone who conquers will be rewarded by the Lord Yeshua Messiah or Jesus Christ! It is time the Church will be unmasked and be exposed in its present condition! Is it ready & prepared enough for the Masters return?

These messages can also be found within the Churches today!

Although these letters were written to these 7 Churches in John's time; in the same strength, power, revealing, weaknesses, and problems these people faced, can also be found within the Churches today! Hear also what the Holy Spirit is revealing to you today!  Are there any area in your life that need to be cleansed, purified, of anything that is displeasing the Master? Today the Lord is revealing & reproving sin; calling out for repentance, (2 Chronicles 7:14) bringing us to a renewed and more powerful position of dedication, commitment & devotion in a deeper relationship with Him!

The main goal of these letters to the 7 churches...

The main goal of these letters to the 7 churches was to strengthen and enable the saints to overcome every defeating attempt of the enemy also for nowadays Christianity! The Lord is also calling to nowadays Christianity for the things that grieves Him, such as "Loss of first love", "compromises with the world", "false or wrong confession", "loss of spiritual authority", "allowing false teachers", "spiritual death", etc... There is a serious warning about the 'price' that has to be paid for persistent disobedience to the Lord! The lord sees beyond the 'surface', beyond the outward appearances, to discern the real 'condition' within the churches! He is positioning our accountability, by pruning, correcting, warning, cleansing and preparing all of us for His soon coming! (Revelation 3:19).

“Of all things that Apostle John saw.”...

“Of all things that he saw This relates to Apostle John as the receiver of the Revelation from G-D {YHWH} to man (Revelation 1:1). It was John who bore record of the Word of G-D, the testimony of Jesus Christ or Yeshua Messiah, and all things that he saw. The next to the last verse of John's Gospel (Revelation 21:24) can well be quoted here as proving the authenticity of this book as well as his Gospel. “This is the disciple which testified of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.” The authenticity of Revelation then is based upon the testimony of G-D the Father {YHWH}, Yeshua or Jesus Christ the Son, and John who was moved upon by the Holy Spirit (Revelation 1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 19:10; 21:9, 10) to record “all things that he saw” from the Father and the Son. The force of the Word “saw” implies not only the mere act of looking, but the actual perception of the object. It is used forty-five times in this book!

The Three Divisions of Revelation

1. “Write the things which thou hast seen That is, as the first division of this book write the vision that you saw of Me (Yeshua - Christ) in the midst of the candlesticks in Revelation 1:11-18 (Rev. 1:19). This John did in the first chapter of the book. Revelation Chapter 1; the vision of Yeshua Messiah or the Christ the High-Priest of Heaven after the order of Melchisedec in the midst of the candlesticks with a priestly garment!  Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Yeshua Messiah made an High priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. (Hebrews 6:20) Melchizedek was an earthly king & priest (Genesis 14:18-20; 7:1-28) Melchizedek's origin was not recorded (Hebrews 7:6) so he could be a mere type of Yeshua Messiah's eternity!

2. “Write the things which areThat is, in the second division of the book of Revelation write the things that I (Yeshua - Christ) will tell you to write about concerning the churches, or concerning the Church on earth. This John did in Rev. 2:1–3:22 (Rev. 1:19).

3. “Write the things which must be hereafter That is, as the third and last division of the book of Revelation write the things that I (Yeshua - Christ) will show you after you have completed things concerning the churches. These last things do not concern the things of the churches—they concern events after the Church Age. These things to happen after the Church Age were recorded by John in Rev. 4:1–22:21 (Rev. 1:19).

5. The Church of Sardis...

3:1

And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God,  [the sevenfold Holy Spirit] and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a Name that thou livest, and art dead.

Since the Lamb has the seven horns and seven eyes, since we know there is but one Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:4-6), and since the Lamb is a symbol of Yeshua or the Christ, the seven lamps of fire (Rev. 4:5), the seven horns, and seven eyes are all symbolic of the one Holy Spirit and can only denote His fullness and power upon the Lamb and before the throne (Jn. 3:34; Isa. 11:2; 42:1-7; 61:1-2; Acts 10:38).

Η  Synagogue at Sardis (inside)

 3:2

Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before G-D. (KJV)

Rouse yourselves {and} keep awake, and strengthen {and} invigorate what remains and is on the point of dying; for I have not found a thing that you have done [any work of yours] meeting the requirements of My God {or} perfect in His sight. (Amplified)

Sardis was known among the churches for her supposed spiritual vitality, yet the all-knowing Yeshua/Christ pronounced her dead. Laodicea deceived herself as to her true state! Christ’s rebuke was intended for deliverance and restoration. "I have not found thy works perfect [complete] before God! In the sight of men, all might appear well, but NOT in God’s sight! Only a few G-Dly members

They had so compromised and had allowed the world so much part of them and so were drawn away by the lust of the flesh!

Sardis: Since 1958, both Harvard & Cornell Universities have sponsored annual archeological expeditions to Sardis. These excavations unearthed perhaps the most impressive synagogue in the western Diaspora yet discovered from antiquity, yielding over eighty Greek and seven Hebrew inscriptions as well as numerous mosaic floors. The discovery of the Sardis synagogue has reversed previous assumptions about Judaism in the later Roman empire. Along with the discovery of the god fearers/theosebeis inscription from the Aphrodisias, it provides indisputable evidence for the continued vitality of Jewish communities in Asia Minor, their integration into general Roman imperial civic life, and their size and importance at a time when many scholars previously assumed that Christianity had eclipsed Judaism

3:3

Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. (KJV)

So call to mind the lessons you received and heard; continually lay them to heart {and} obey them, and repent. In case you will not rouse yourselves {and} keep awake {and watch}, I will come upon you like a thief, and you will not know {or} suspect at what hour I will come. (Amplified)

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. Hebrews 5:12 (KJV)
You ought to be able to instruct others. He does not mean to say, evidently, that they ought all to become public teachers, or preachers of the gospel, but that they ought to be able to explain to others the truths of the Christian faith

This does not refer to the second coming, but to the Lord Who is sending sudden judgment upon Sardis if the church would not repent. (also in: 1 Thessalonians 5:2)

The general idea is plain, that there was something marked and unusual in the way in which they had been led to embrace the gospel, and that it was highly proper in these circumstances to look back to the days when they gave themselves to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is always well for Christians to call to remembrance the "day of their views and feelings when they gave their hearts to the Savior, and to compare those views with their present condition! (See also: Hebrews 5:12)
You have been professed Christians long enough to be teachers, but because of your laziness and dullness in grasping truth, you must be taught a second time the first simple doctrines of Yeshua Messiah. You have not grown at all. You are still as un-weaned babes!

Also the nowadays Church is filled with 'compromisers who are committing spiritual adultery with the world and joined together with those who are bound to man's tradition and his evil carnal ways. Many people today are so preoccupied with their wealth, pleasure, etc...had has become guilty of compromising the Word of G-D and His statures. and had changed it to accommodate the worldly standards! Today 'Christians' have slowly been conditioned (allowed) until there is a 'spirit of indifference toward the immorality and evilness.

3:4

Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy. (KJV)

Yet you still have a few [persons'] names in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes, and they shall walk with Me in white, because they are worthy {and} deserving. (Amplified)

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Matthew 7:20 (KJV)
See also: (John 15:2)

There were a few persons who had kept themselves free from the general contamination. In most cases, when error and sin prevail, there may be found a few who are worthy of the Divine commendation; a few who show that true religion may exist even when the mass are evil. (Romans 11:4)
The grace and dignity of long flowing garments is seen to the best advantage when the person “walks.” Even so the saint’s full character will appear when he serves the Lord perfectly hereafter (22:3). for they are worthy—states the reason for the Christians’ walking with the Lord Jesus. Such worthiness is not their own, but it is given to them from Yeshua!

Sardis, Η also Sardes; modern Sart in the Manisa province of Turkey, was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, one of the important cities of the Persian Empire, the seat of a proconsul under the Roman Empire, and the metropolis of the province Lydia in later Roman and Byzantine times. In John writings Sardis was in terms which seem to imply that its population was notoriously soft and fainthearted. Its importance was due, first to its military strength, secondly to its situation on an important highway leading from the interior to the Aegean coast, and thirdly to its commanding the wide and fertile plain of the Hermus. Once at least, under the emperor Tiberius, in AD 17, it was destroyed by an earthquake; but it was always rebuilt. It was one of the great cities of western Asia Minor until the later Byzantine period. The early Lydian kingdom was far advanced in the industrial arts and Sardis was the chief seat of its manufactures. The most important of these trades was the manufacture and dyeing of delicate woolen stuffs and carpets.

The old man...

The spirit, nature, and power of sin the old man, which is nothing more nor less than the spirit, nature, and power of the devil working in men of disobedience. "Old things"!

(1) The old man (Rom. 6:6; Eph. 4:22; Col. 3:9) (2) Sin (Jn. 1:29; 8:34; Rom. 6:4; 8:2)

3:5

He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the *Book of life, but I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels. (KJV)

Thus shall he who conquers (is victorious) be clad in white garments, and I will not erase {or} blot out his name from the *Book of Life; I will acknowledge him [as Mine] {and} I will confess his name openly before My Father and before His angels. (Amplified)

Ancient cities kept registers of their citizens; of course, the names of the 'dead' were erased! So those that have a name indicating that they 'live' but who are actually 'dead' will be blotted out of G-D’s roll of the Heavenly citizens and heirs of eternal life! Yeshua promises not to blot the name out of the Book of life of any man who will obey the commands! "Whosoever hath sinned against Me, him will I blot out of My Book" (Exodus 32:32-33)

Ε Old things Ζ

Fifth promise for the over-comer!
Four promises to the overcomer: 1. Walk with Me in white (Rev. 3:4)
2. Be clothed in white raiment
(Rev. 3:5;  3:18; 4:4; 6:11; 7:9,13; 15:6; 19:8,14)
3. I will not blot his name out of the book of life
(Rev. 3:5;  22:18-19; Ex. 32:32-33; Ps. 69:28) 4. I will confess his name before My Father and the angels (Rev. 3:5)

Whosoever he may be that shall overcome sin and the temptations of this world, shall be admitted to this glorious reward. The promise is made not only to those in Sardis who should be victorious, but to all in every age and every Nation. The hope that is thus held out before us, is that of appearing with the Redeemer in His kingdom, clad in robes expressive of Holiness and joy!

To avoid compromise!
* Recognize it and repent!
* Be involved with the Scriptures!
* Let 'old things' passing away!
* Intolerance against compromise!
* Separate yourself from the world!
* Have a Holy 'walk" before Him!
* Travail for a revival!
* Looking after a personal relation-ship with God!

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.  (Colossians 2:8)

3:6

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (KJV)

He who is able to hear, let him listen to {and} heed what the [Holy] Spirit says to the assemblies (churches). (Amplified)

The ultimate purpose of G-D in all creation is to redeem it from all rebellion and sin, and to restore it to original sinlessness and perfection! (Rev. 21:3-7). This is the purpose of the reign of Yeshua (1Cor. 15:24-28; Eph. 1:10; Rev. 22:3; Job 5:24).

Not soiled their garments...

Not every believer in Sardis was being condemned for complacency and compromise with the world. The Lord Yeshua Messiah pointed out that some had not soiled their garments with evil deeds! These believers were being faithful! It must have been encouraging to those few who had been attempting to live for Yeshua Messiah in this "dead" church that the Lord Jesus Christ was commending them as worthy of His Name. Yeshua Messiah promises a threefold reward for these faithful few. To be clothed in white means to be set apart for God, cleansed from sin, and made morally and spiritually pure in the eyes of God! The Book of Revelation mentions white robes several times. (Revelation 3:18; 4:4; 6:11; 7:9, 13; 19:14). The white of these garments symbolizes the purity that comes when one has been “washed” in Jesus Christ’s precious Divine  blood! Only those who have allowed Yeshua Messiah to cleanse them from their sins and clothe them in white will be able to reign with Him! (Revelation 2:27).

6. The Church of Philadelphia...

Ε  Philadelphia ("Alaehir, in Antiquity; city of brotherly love") is a town and district of Manisa Province in the Aegean region of Turkey. It is situated in the valley of the Kuzuηay, at the foot of the Bozda  The city is connected to Izmir by a 105 km (65 miles) railway. It stands on elevated ground commanding the extensive and fertile plain of the Gediz River, presents at a distance an imposing appearance. There are small industries and a fair trade. From one of the mineral springs comes a heavily charged water popular around Turkey. As Philadelphia, Alaehir was a highly important center in the early-Christian and Byzantine periods, and remained a titular see of the Catholic Church.
Alaehir began as perhaps one of the first ancient cities with the name Philadelphia. It was established in 189 BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamon (197-160 BC). Eumenes II named the city for the love of his brother, who would be his successor, Attalus II (159-138 BC), whose loyalty earned him the nickname, "Philadelphos", literally meaning "one who loves his brother". Rome established the province of Asia in 129 BC by combining Ionia and the former Kingdom of Pergamum. Philadelphia was in the administrative district of Sardis. In AD 17, the city suffered badly in an earthquake, and the emperor Tiberius relieved it of having to pay taxes. in response, the city granted honors to Tiberius. Evidence from coinage reveals that Caligula helped the city; under Vespasian, Philadelphia received his cognomen, Flavia. Under Caracalla, Philadelphia housed an imperial cult; its coins bore the word Neokoron (literally, "temple-sweeper"--caretaker of the temple). A small theater located at the northern edge of Toptepe Hill is all that remains of Roman Philadelphia. Η View at Ancient Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the sixth church of the seven.(Revelation 1:11). A letter specifically addressed to the Philadelphian church is recorded in (Revelation 3:7-13). According to this letter, the Philadelphian Christians were suffering persecution at the hands of the local Jews, whom Revelation calls "the synagogue of satan'.

The Church at Philadelphia was called alive and no criticism for it!

3:7

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith He that is Holy, He that is true, He that hath the Key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

Four good things about Philadelphia:

1. Works

2. Little strength

3. Kept My Word

4. Not denied My name

Keys signify power and authority (Rev. 3:7; Mt. 16:19; 18:18; Isa. 22:22).

Key of David:

The same Lord Jesus has the key of government and authority in and over the church. He opens a door of opportunity to his churches; he opens a door of utterance to his ministers; he opens a door of entrance, opens the heart. He shuts the door of heaven against the foolish, who sleep away their day of grace; and against the workers of iniquity, how vain and confident so ever they may be. Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.

1. I will expose all liars (Rev. 3:9).
2. I will humble them before you.
3. I will confirm My love of you to them.
4. I will keep you from persecution (Rev. 3:10).
5. I will come quickly (Rev. 3:11; 1:7; 19:11).
6. I will make you a pillar in the temple of My God (Rev. 3:12; cp. Gal. 2:9).
7. You will never go out, but will always have a safe dwelling place (Rev. 3:12).
8. I will give you God's name (Rev. 3:12).
9. I will give you the name of the New Jerusalem (Rev. 3:12; Rev. 21:2,9-10).
10. I will give you My new name (Rev. 3:12)

3:8

I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept My Word, and hast not denied My Name.

3:9

Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. (KJV) {...learn and acknowledge  - Amp}.

Outwardly (Matthew 23:28)

1. I will expose all liars
2. I will humble
them before you.
3. I will confirm My love of you to
them.

3:10

Because thou hast kept the Word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth

That is, I will so keep you that you shall not sink under the trials which will prove a severe temptation to many. This does not mean that they would be actually kept from calamity of all kinds, but that they would be kept from the temptation of apostasy in calamity. He would give them grace to bear up under trials with a Christian spirit, and in such a manner that their salvation should not be endangered.

3:11

Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (Rev. 2:10)

A reference to the rapture, for this is the coming of Christ the church will experience before the second coming of the Messiah & before the tribulation! (1Th. 4:13-17; 2Th. 2:7).

3:12

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, which is New Jerusalem, which cometh down out of Heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My New Name.

7. The Church of Laodicea...

3:14

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of G-D;

That is, the One who began creating all things in the very beginning (John. 1:3; Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 1:15-18; Hebrews 1:2; 11:3). It could not mean that He was the first to be created by G-D, for He is an uncreated and eternal being! (Isaiah 9:6-7; Micah 5:2; John. 1:1-2; Hebrews 1:8; Revelation 1:8

Laodicea (Historical) on the Lycus was the ancient metropolis of Phrygia Pacatiana built on the river Lycus, in Anatolia near the modern village of Eskihisar Denizli Province, Turkey. Laodicea is situated on the long spur of a hill between the narrow valleys of the small rivers Asopus and Caprus, which discharge their waters into the Lycus. The town was originally called Diospolis, "City of Zeus", and afterwards Rhoas, and Laodicea, the building of which is ascribed to Antiochus II Theos, in 261-253 BC, in honor of his wife Laodice, was probably founded on the site of the older town. Ε  Street view of Laodicea

At first Laodicea was not a place of much importance, but it soon acquired a high degree of prosperity. In 220 BC Achaeus was its king. In 188 BC, the city had passed to the Kingdom of Pergamon, and after 133 BC fell under Roman control. It suffered greatly during the Mithridatic Wars, but quickly recovered under the dominion of Rome; and towards the end of the Roman Republic and under the first emperors, Laodicea, benefiting from its advantageous position on a trade route, became one of the most important and flourishing commercial cities of Asia Minor, in which large money transactions and an extensive trade in black wool were carried on. The place often suffered from earthquakes, especially from the great shock in the reign of Nero (60 AD), in which it was completely destroyed. But the inhabitants declined imperial assistance to rebuild the city and restored it from their own means. The wealth of its inhabitants created among them a taste for the arts of the Greeks, as is manifest from its ruins; and that it did not remain behind in science and literature and by the existence of a great medical school. Its wealthy citizens embellished Laodicea with beautiful monuments. It received from Rome the title of free city. During the Roman period Laodicea was the chief city of a Roman conventus, which comprised twenty-four cities besides itself; Cicero records holding assizes there ca. 50 BC.

Antiochus the Great transported 2000 Jewish families to Phrygia from Babylonia. Many of Laodicea's inhabitants were Jews, and Cicero records that Flaccus confiscated the considerable sum of 9 kg of gold which was being sent annually to Jerusalem for the Temple (28-68).

The Christian community in the city seems to have been connected with that of nearby Colossae. Laodicea is mentioned five times in the New Testament's epistle to the Colossians. It was probably owing to its large Jewish community, that at a very early period it became one of the chief seats of Christianity, and the seer of a bishop. Laodicea receives passing mention in the epistle to the Colossians The Laodicean Church had probably been founded by the Colossian Epaphras, who shared the care of it with Nymphas, in whose house the faithful used to assemble. Paul asks the Colossians to communicate to the Church of Laodicea the letter which he sends to them, and to read publicly that which should come to them from Laodicea, that is, no doubt, a letter which he had written, or was to write, to the Laodiceans. An apocryphal epistle purporting to be from Paul to the Laodiceans is extant in Latin and Arabic (see Epistle to the Laodiceans). Some of the Greek manuscripts end the First Epistle to Timothy with these words: "Written at Laodicea, metropolis of Phrygia Pacatiana".

From the third chapter and seventeenth verse of Revelation we should gather it was a place of great wealth. Christianity was introduced into Laodicea, not, however, as it would seem, through the direct agency of Apostle. Paul. We have good reason for believing that when, in writing from Rome to the Christians of Colossζ, he sent a greeting to those of Laodicea, he had not personally visited either place. But the preaching of the gospel at Ephesus, Acts 18:19-19:41 must inevitably have resulted in the formation of churches in the neighboring cities, especially where Jews were settled; and there were Jews in Laodicea. In subsequent times it became a Christian city of eminence, the see of bishop and a meeting-place of councils. The Mohammedan invaders destroyed it, and it is now a scene of utter desolation, as was prophesied in Revelation 3:14-22 and the extensive ruins near Denislu justify all that we read of Laodicea.  Drawing of ancient Laodicea & aquaduct

Some scholars have suggested that this metaphor has been drawn from the water supply of the city, which was lukewarm, in contrast to the hot springs at nearby Hierapolis and the pure water of Colossae (Barclay). The archaeology shows Laodicea had an aqueduct (An aqueduct is a conduit or channel for conducting water from one place to another; see picture; is not originally from Laodicea; just  for example!) that probably carried water from hot mineral springs some five miles south, which would have become tepid before entering the city  Strabo states that the water was hard, though drinkable The imagery of the Laodicean aqueduct suggests not that "hot" is good and "cold" is bad, but that both hot and cold water are useful, whereas lukewarm water is useless!

3:15

 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

3:16

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

Laodicea had no local water supply, so water was brought in by conduit from hot springs some distance away. The water no doubt arrived lukewarm, like the spiritual condition of the Laodiceans. The point is that the cold and pure waters of Colosse and the hot and medicinal waters of Hierapolis both could be put to good use. But lukewarm water was good for nothing!

Laodicea was the last and worst of the seven churches of Asia. Yeshua/Jesus styles Himself, "The Amen; the Alpha & Omega";" The One steady and unchangeable in all His purposes and promises. If your belief is worth anything, it is worth everything. Yeshua/Christ expects men should be in earnest. One cause of this indifference and inconsistency in religion is, self-conceit & self-delusion. There are many in hell, who once thought themselves far in the way to Heaven. Let us plead to our G-D that we may not be left to flatter and deceive ourselves. How careful should we be not to deceive our owns souls! They could not see their state, nor their way, nor their danger, yet they thought they saw it. They had not the garment of justification, nor sanctification: they were exposed to sin and shame; They were naked! Let us examine ourselves by the rule of His Word, and pray earnestly for the teaching of His Holy Spirit, to take away our pride, prejudices, and worldly lusts! Yeshua Himself had temptations and conflicts; He overcame them all, and was more than a conqueror! Those made like to Him in His trials, shall be made like to Him in Glory. All is closed with the general demand of attention. And these counsels, while suited to the churches to which they were addressed, are deeply interesting to all men! (Partly out of: Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary)

3:17

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Ε  Drawing of ancient Laodicea

They claimed to be:
1. I am rich.
2. I am increased with goods.
3. I have need of nothing.

But Yeshua/Christ's Sevenfold Estimate of the Laodiceans:
1. Neither cold nor hot
2. Lukewarm, sickening
3. Wretched
4. Miserable; pitiable
5. Poor
6. Blind in ears, mind, and eyes. Used of spiritual darkness
7. Naked; unclad; stripped of arms; defenseless; "bare
"

3:18

 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.

Hear counsel, receive instruction, {and} accept correction, that you may be wise in the time to come. (Proverbs 19:20)

Fivefold counsel to the Laodiceans:
1. Buy of Me gold tried in the fire
2. Buy of Me white raiment
3. Anoint your eyes with eye salve.
4. Be zealous to save your souls
5. Repent! (Rev. 2:5,16; 3:3)

The word is used here in the sense of doing business with G-D on His terms. Man sold himself a slave to sin and satan. G-D paid the price of OUR redemption. Man is now obligated to meet G-D's terms of faith, repentance, and service if He wants to be redeemed. The word is not used here of man actually paying a price in money or goods -- exchanging material things for the gold, raiment, and ointment of Rev. 3:18 -- but rather of his paying the price of renouncing satan, repenting of sins, and consecrating to G-D in face of suffering persecution such as Christians must suffer for Yeshua or Christ! They had to obtain the garment of justification & sanctification!

3:19

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

If a child of G_D wants to claim he is being chastened by G-D, then let him acknowledge also that he has repeatedly refused to listen to G-D or obey Him (Job 33). Let him acknowledge his sins, for G-D does not send plagues upon obedient children. They are given promises of healing and protection from plagues if they will but appropriate them!

3:20

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me

Picture source: Salzmann illustration: "Christ at Heart's Door".

Threefold condition of the Lord's invitation:
1. If any man hears! (discern)
2. If any man opens the door!
3. If any man is willing to sup with Me

3:21

To him that over-cometh will I grant to sit with Me in My Throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His Throne.

Seventh promise for the over-comer!

The Lord invites them to repent (3:20). Yeshua was depicted as outside the church, inviting the Christians within to receive Him. In view is the final invitation to Christ’s messianic banquet (Jewish wedding of 7 days/years)(3:21). The believer is promised the privilege of sitting with Yeshua on His Throne (In the Heavenly Temple) and reigning with Him throughout eternity (22:5; 2 Timothy 2:12). Refers to the millennium reign!

3:22

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

The prudent 300-Gideon-warrior-soldiers on the contrary, looked carefully around, and keeping guard against a surprise from the enemies, drank with prudent care, dipping up the water with their hands, and looking carefully around with their watchful eyes; thus were the wary one's chosen, and the others dismissed!

7 times in Revelation  2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22. An encouragement to be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit! Our sensitivity to the Holy Spirit is vital! By allowing Him to open G-D's Word to us; we will become more mature in spirituality! It is also the Lord's serious warning to be alert and not falling asleep!

Like the 300-Gideon-warrior-soldiers were selected who knelt and brought the water up to their months were in a alert position to 'watch' for enemy activities! Those with their heads bowed down to the water were in no position to see anything except what satisfied their own needs! We are also called for many times to be continually watchful & able to discern the prophetic time cycles! Courage and willingness to fight are not enough! The Lord's frontline warriors must also "watch & intercede"!

Dead

No longer alive: having passed from the living state to being no longer alive;
Inanimate: never having been alive and having none of the characteristics of a living thing;
Without living things: having no living things, or unable to support life; having lost normal sensitivity to touch or pain, e.g. from the effects of cold; showing little indication of feeling or vitality;
Lacking activity or interest: without human activity or anything interesting or entertaining;
No longer able to operate because of a fault, breakdown, or loss of power;
Defunct no longer operative, valid, or functional, or no longer in existence;

Spiritual dead; Separated from God; No longer belonging to the living people, even still 'living' on this planet Earth; living in darkness!

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. (1 Peter 4:6) Those who are now dead had the gospel preached to them while they were alive, just as those who are now alive are hearing the gospel. It was preached to Abraham (Galatians 3:8) and to Israel (Hebrews 4:1-2). Even Abel, Enoch, Noah, and others had the gospel (Hebrews 11). In cases where men have not had the law or the gospel, God will judge them on the basis of the light they have had and according to their living up to the conscience (Romans 2:12-16).

Alive

Still in existence: still existing, continuing, or functioning;
Full of lifefull of energy and vigor, and with a zest for an interest in life;
Still interesting: relevant, or vividly imaginable for people in the present day;
Still active, healthy, or functioning vigorously;

Apostate

Somebody who renounces belief: allegiance;
Renunciation of faith: the renunciation of a religious belief;  a set of principles, or a moral allegiance;
Synonyms: renounce; defector, deserter, renegade;

Outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity The way of millions today in churches whose Christianity goes no deeper than what can be seen. (Matthew 23:28)

Scripture Θ reference

Commentary Θ

The over-comers are those who rise above the problems also in their particular local church to live a life pleasing to Yeshua/Jesus.
After Yeshua's/Christ’s 2-sd coming the over-comers shall reign over the nations together with Him (3:21; 20:4).

Genesis 2

The church at Ephesus   Rebuke!
the church that had forsaken its first love (2:4)

(Rev. 2:7; Genesis 2)

Inherit eternal life! Live in the New Jerusalem
Give to eat of the tree of life—The tree of life in paradise (the new Jerusalem), lost by the fall, will be restored by the Redeemer. Allusions to the tree of life occur in Proverbs 3:18; 11:30; 13:12; 15:4; Ezekiel 47:12; and Revelation 22:2, 14. It is interesting to note how closely these introductory addresses are linked to the rest of the book of Revelation. The “tree of life” appears also in 22:1. Eating from the tree of life pictures the gift of eternal life. In paradise God will restore the perfect fellowship that existed in the Garden of Eden before sin entered and ruined the relationship between people and God!

  To overcome...

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Rev 17:14 They that with the Messiah during this Tribulation-battle are over-comers as well! (Raptured righteous saints who are returning from Heaven to Earth with the Messiah)
  I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 1 John 2:13, 14

This is the secret of victory over sin. As long as one remains in harmony with the Word of God he cannot sin (1 John. 3:9)..

  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4 Referring to the Holy Spirit indwelling the believer (1Jn. 4:4,13; 3:24); than satan who is in the world (1Jn. 4:4,6; 2:13-14; 3:8-10; 5:18; Eph. 2:2; 4:27; 6:10-18).

Those "Over-comers by the Blood of God's Army-Division" will bring what every Christian should be aware of: "The inner awareness that we are on the way toward the event of meeting the coming Yeshua Messiah or Jesus the Christ!"
...To
these selected specific people of "Over-comers by the Blood of God's Army-Division" will be given the authority & activated for any place inside or outside Revival; word-wide in these End-times! These precious saints will have the specific Divine supernatural knowledge, which is far above our limited human thinking and comprehension! They are having a very specific anointing from G-D and they are messengers strait from Heaven, revealing the mysteries of G-D in & for these End-times! They are having the strong End-Time-Anointing to have the discernment to see in the spiritual realms! They are the carriers of  "the song of Moses"; which symbolic refers first to begin with praise to God and following which the triumphant song of victory which shows that the G-D of the Universe is still reigning forever and ever! It is mentioned as the "today's' triumph song over the enemy of G-D; satan, and the antichrist! (The Book of Revelation is all about Jesus' victory and satan's final defeat, according G-D's determination & plan!) They are going to unfold G-D's plan for the Earth and unseal the mysteries & secrets of G-D; declaring the Scriptural prophecies of the future, which is going to be happen any moment,  for this specific End-Time-Harvest-Revival!

These precious righteous saints of G-D are like forerunners of the two witnesses who will come to Earth, for what the "two witnesses" will perform during the time of tribulation! (The 70th week of Daniel) (Revelation 11)  And I will give power unto My two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. (Revelation 11:3; KJV) Their anointing is similar, but in different measures; not as  the two "tribulation" witnesses have in Revelation 11!

Are you an Over-comer?

The very G-D Himself is involved in the great assembly of the righteous saints! (Rapture) There is a trumpet that G-D has; it is a solid golden trumpet. When the silver trumpets been sound we as the great assembly of the righteous saints are going to be up to meet the Lord in the air!

Yeshua Messiah gives us power to live for Him now, and He gives us hope for the future! He will return very very very soon! You need to be in Yeshua; to be Yeshua's; blessed, holy and worthy; having a pure heart; living and walking in the Holy Spirit; so you are walking in the light! Rapture is not just a blessing for only a Christian, but for the Over-comers. In the Book of  Revelation Chapters 2 + 3
7 times is written to be an
Over-comer!

by Paul van Beek

But the souls of the righteousness are in the hand of G-D and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction, and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they are been punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of Himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings He took them for Himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and dart about as sparks through stubble; they shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever. Those who trust in Him shall understand truth and the faithful shall abide with Him in love. Because grace and mercy are with His Holy ones and care is with His elect. (Words of Wisdom)
